At the time, many smaller empires were also city-states; however, a number of nation-states existed, such as the Aerylothian Empire.
Heraldry
They used a royal banner of a golden horse over a field of green. After king Ealred 4 vig Brynsen's death at the hands of Draol vormonger invaders in EE 4,625, the city-state was under their rule until Genther Stormloft would return to liberate the people and restore power. A new king was chosen, Devonian 3 vig Skeller, who kept the same royal banner, but after his assassination, the banner would change to feature the legendary winged horse, Thurreliot, and it would remain so until present day.
Industry
Gruen was mainly known for their expertise in horse husbandry and riding. They were considered the greatest horsemen in the world, and boasted the best caval in the world. Along with this, the climate made for great vineyards and growing olives. In addition, many farmers raised goats, which added goat milk and cheese to the list of dominant goods at the time.

Fall of Gruen
The city-state came under attack in the early morning hours of the 8th of Trunalus in EE 4,625 by a sudden contingency of about 2,000 Bynalite forces. This was completely unexpected, as the Bynalites had arrived from the north, despite their empire being far to the south. No one saw them arrive, and it was initially thought that they had murdered any scouts. In reality, they were aided by four Draol magickers who transported the troops through a Dreadgate portal. After the Gruen forces killed the initial contingency to the last, the Draol appeared, emerging from a tent overlooking the battlefield. These were vormongers, and it was all according to plan. They proceeded to harvest the energy from all the dead, which they used to lay waste to the city until they had it under their control. Amidst the chaos after the first retreat, Genther Stormloft was dispatched as a messenger to Meralia when all the others perished in a lightning storm. It would be his news of the attack that would lead to the Meralian Accord, and subsequently kick off the Great Purge.
