The Martyr Atlicana card

Atlicana Cards are cards that make up the decks used to play the game Atlicana. Full decks consists of 33 cards of three suits - reds, greens, and blues- to correspond with the 33 days in each month. Each card depicts a certain typecast. Atlicana cards have been around for centuries and were at one time co-opted by the Draol Order for use in fortune telling. The cards are now very hard to come by, but it is a very common game for those who can acquire the cards. It is said to be very dangerous to have a full deck, as many will kill to acquire such a possession.

Atlicana cards are first seen in Wornspire (subchapter) when Anya attempts to leave the game room during break.

Atlicana as Religion

Some people use the archetypes of Atlicana cards as a sort of religion. People familiar with the cards may at times pray to one of the "deities" on the cards, depending on what they want help with. For example, if they feel defeated, they may pray to the Vanquished for strength to endure their hardships. The most powerful act, however, is burning a card in sacrifice, as these cards are rare and valuable. It can be very difficult to find the desired card; this is made even harder if the owner becomes aware of the sacrificial intention.

Notes

  • The Arkaeni student Meryne uses a special complete set of Atlicana cards for divination. These cards have a different look and larger sizing than typical cards, and for this reason they are exempt from use in the game, and therefore she can avoid danger, as no one will want them for gambling.
