A caval is, in short, a cavalry. It refers to the military unit comprised solely of soldiers on horseback (a cavalier). Like other types of military units, the caval is broken up into various subunits, and while a typical legion was comprised of about 4-5000 men (different from a Roman legion), around 300 of these would be caval. These 300 would be broken up into 10 distinct subunits of 30 cavaliers. These subunits are called cavalions, and each would be led by a commander. There was also no need to give each caval its own designation; one would simply say the cavalion and the legion it belonged to: 7th Cavalion, 6th Legion.
