Kestrinal is a Scurnish province that once existed as an independent eastern country before being unified with Letania to form the nation of Scurn in 1271.1. It occupied the eastern half of what is now Scurn, characterized by rolling hills, fertile valleys, and a rugged northeastern coastline.
Prior to unification, Kestrinal was ruled by House Cromston, whose straightforward but physically violent approach to governance eventually led to their downfall during the revolutionary period. The house was executed by beheading during the coup that preceded the Letanian Ultimatum. Under Cromston rule, Kestrinal maintained a decentralized feudal system with regional lords managing territories with varying degrees of autonomy.
This decentralized structure likely contributed to how the remote northeastern regions of Charth and Mormark were able to resist the Letanian Ultimatum while technically remaining within Scurn's claimed borders.
People of Kestrinal were traditionally referred to as being "Kestrinali," a term that carries cultural pride to this day. Many inhabitants of eastern Scurn still identify as Kestrinali first and Scurnish second, maintaining distinctive regional dialects, cuisine, and architectural styles.
The complex relationship with Charth and Mormark remains a political gray area. While officially considered part of Scurn, these regions maintain their noble houses (Blint and Yearl) and traditional governance, functioning as de facto independent entities in many respects.
