A battlefield mage, colloquially called a war whore, was a magic user who accompanied or loitered near battle sites to collect energy stirred up from the carnage. Some were a part of the battle. This was done to circumvent the Ygwer Code, which forbade killing for the purpose of harvesting magical energy.
