VEC are "variable-output energy cartidges" which are ammunition for a new class of personal assault weapon called the VAPER (variable assault photon energy rig). The weapon is an arm-mounted energy projector, like a gun, that uses the VECs, which are color-coded according to their function. They are commonly called "Variable Effects Cartridges" incorrectly.

- red - tranquilizer
- white - cold
- orange - heat
- green - nausea
- black - oxygen depletion
- blue - electricity charge
- yellow - sonic
