A dungcarl is a person who carts human waste out of some settlements to be dried in dungfields for use as fire kindling. These are typically only found in areas without adequate plumbing, such as Listhaven, and the work is hardly ever done for pay, but performed by prisoners as community service. Venicus Mor is a voluntary dungcarl.
Process
Since most dungcarls are prisoners, the operation is usually overseen by guards. Whether the job is voluntary or not, duty usually starts at a predetermined time each day. Public latrines that aren't simply holes in the ground will consist of stalls, each having a half barrel or other receptacle. These receptacles are removed and transported to the dungfields.
Transporting the full receptacles is either done by carrying, two to a container, or dragging with a rope harness. The harnesses are typically reserved for non criminal workers, as they allow for the dungcarl to distance themselves from the smell and spillage.
Appearances and Mentions
- The first mention of this occupation is in Venicus Yearns, although it is described in detail in Path of the Outrider.
