Niril is one of Emperor Vralius's three Arkaeni advisors. He is the oldest of the three and the most skilled, though the other two believe him to be the least skilled because that is the persona he wants to portray. He is also the least manipulative of the three. He served as the 14th Head of the Arcaeni Order from 1284-1303, being the best choice at the time; he never wanted the position, however, so he abdicated when his successor, Theopholus, could replace him. Theopholus had been away in search of lost texts in the bowels of the ancient Immortal City. Niril is described as looking the most like a wizard of the three, with dark skin, spectacles, and wild, dreadlocked hair. He is also noted for having a general lack of concern for hygiene. Because of this, Aridessa does not like to collaborate with him, as she can't stand the smell. He is skilled in alchemy and ancient religions and cultures.

Key Roles

Niril was directly involved in the development of the synthetic hormone phyrocinin, along with Doctor Talmage, based off his research into the drug adoxipham. The drug uses a substance supplied by the Vurg which was believed to contain magic. Niril took a special interest in the drug's magical properties, which led him to petition Talmage for use of his laboratory at Wornspire. Their work together began in 1322.6; their work enabled them to build a secret weapon that could be used against the Vurg at a later time, should the need arise. It was Niril who first noticed how the Vurg would only perform their transfusions from within the safety of byrridium-lined chambers, which is why the walls of the Arkaeni lair at Victurus are also lined with the material. While he doesn't yet know the true nature of the Vurg, his expertise in ancient lore and magic serve him well in the experiments with Talmage.
