A caval is, in short, a cavalry. It refers to the military unit comprised solely of soldiers on horseback (a cavalier). Like other types of military units, the caval is broken up into various subunits, and while a typical legion was comprised of about 1000 men (different from a Roman legion), around 300 of these would be caval.
