Gruen was a modest city-state in the time of the Befores, which would eventually develop into the region now known as Gruenormark (after several centuries as Gruenor). It was ruled for generations by House Brynsen from the palace citadel of Eldstone, and later by House Skeller.

At its height, Gruen boasted a population of approximately 100,000, with many citizens residing in surrounding villas beyond the city walls. While relatively small compared to larger empires such as the Aerylothian Empire, Gruen was considered one of the most stable and prosperous city-states of its time.

Heraldry
The royal banner of Gruen originally depicted a golden horse over a field of green. Following the death of King Ealred 4 vig Brynsen during the Draol incursion in EE 4,625, the city briefly fell under hostile control before being reclaimed by loyalist forces under Genther Stormloft.

A new king, Devonian 3 vig Skeller, was installed and initially retained the traditional banner. After his later assassination, the royal emblem was changed to depict the legendary winged horse Thurreliot, which remains the symbol of the region into the present age.

Industry
Gruen was renowned for its mastery of horse husbandry and cavalry warfare, maintaining what was widely considered the finest caval in the known world. ==Fall of Gruen==
Great Purge

The fall of Gruen is widely regarded as one of the most consequential events of the late Age of Temperance, and a primary catalyst for the Great Purge.

In the early morning hours of the 8th of Trunalus in EE 4,625, Gruen came under sudden attack by a contingent of approximately 2,000 Bynalite forces. Their arrival was entirely unexpected, as Bynal lay far to the south and no conventional approach had been detected.

It was later revealed that the assault was facilitated by a group of Draol vormongers from a secretive sect calle the Scions of Geth—these were Galem, Caldrid, Ilosa, and Zialyn—who transported the Bynalite forces directly into position using a Dreadgate portal.

The initial invading force was ultimately repelled by Gruen’s defenders, but this outcome had been anticipated. From a vantage overlooking the battlefield, the Draol magickers enacted the second phase of their strategy. Drawing upon the vast number of casualties, they harvested the resulting Vorsys and unleashed it in concentrated bursts, devastating the city and overwhelming its defenses.

During the fall of Eldstone, the Eari advisor Anocast was overtaken by Zialyn, a soulpiercer, who exerted direct control over his magic. Through this act, Anocast was forced to act against his will, leading to the assassination of King Ealred 4 and the collapse of coordinated resistance within the citadel.

With its leadership eliminated and defenses broken, the city-state of Gruen fell under Draol control.

In the chaos, Genther Stormloft was dispatched as a messenger to Meralia after all other envoys perished during a violent lightning storm. This storm had been created by the Draol magickers specifically to target horses with shoes and anyone with armor. It should be noted that Stormloft survived the storm by removing all his clothing and armor; his horse was also unshod. His account of the attack, including the use of portals, large-scale energy harvesting, and the confirmed presence of a soulpiercer, was instrumental in prompting the Meralian Accord.

This, in turn, led directly to the initiation of the Great Purge.

In the time of magic, before the Great Purge, there were a rare and powerful class of vorbright called soulpiercers. While typical sorcerers could harness magical energy to then use in a number of ways, only the soulpiercer could harness magic that was already inside another spellcaster, essentially giving them full control over the subject. Acquiring command of a subject outside oneself was possible, such as in the case of animals, but there was always a payoff in that magic collection and expenditure was always required; one needed a reserve that far exceeded the fex contained within the target to succeed. With soulpiercers, this was not the case. They could use fex that was contained in another without needing the excess reserve.

These mages were so dangerous that eventually all schools of magic would kill off any students that showed any signs of having these abilities. These special individuals would only appear once every few generations.

First Mention
A soulpiercer first appears in the stories of Dreadgate, during the Draol vormonger attack on the Gruen citadel of Eldstone. The Draol employ a soulpiercer to murder the Eari wizard, Anocast, who is advisor to King Ealred 4.

Present Day
Niril the Arkaeni, whose expertise lies in ancient religion and magic, took an interest in the so-called magical properties contained within the drug adoxipham, which he came to believe was made using the blood of living Vurg. Through his research and with the help of Doctor Talmage, they were able to produce a synthetic hormone called phyrocinin, which could replicate the effects of the ancient abilities possessed by these rare and powerful individuals. This eventually won favor with the Emperor, who continued to fund Niril's research into adoxipham and the Vurg.

The Scions of Geth were a clandestine sect of the Draol order that rejected all formal doctrine governing the use of magic. Emerging from within Draol ranks, they opposed both the regulatory philosophy of the Eari and the increasingly institutional structure of the Draol themselves.

They were most active during the late Age of Emperors and into the Age of Temperance, and are widely regarded as the primary catalyst for the Great Purge.

Philosophy
The Scions of Geth believed that magic, or Vorsys, was a natural force that should be exercised without restriction. They rejected the Ygwer Code entirely, viewing it as an artificial system imposed to limit those capable of wielding power.

Where the Eari emphasized restraint and the Draol emphasized mastery, the Scions rejected both approaches, advocating instead for absolute freedom in the acquisition and use of magic. They held that the ancient sorcerers who ruled prior to the 1st Great War represented the truest form of magical expression.

Origins
The Scions of Geth originated as a dissident faction within the Draol order. While the Draol encouraged the accumulation and flexible use of vorsys, they nonetheless operated within a structured system of ranks and shared doctrine.

A number of Draol practitioners came to view even this structure as a limitation. Rejecting all forms of institutional control, they formed loose and secretive networks that operated independently of both the Draol and Eari.

By the onset of the 4th Great War, these networks had coalesced into a coordinated sect, capable of executing large-scale magical operations.

Practices
The Scions were known for extreme and often prohibited applications of magic, including:

* Large-scale harvesting of vorsys from battlefields and mass death
* Use of portals to deploy forces across great distances
* Environmental manipulation, including storms, frost, and fire
* The use of illicit arts without restriction

Their methods were characterized by a willingness to sacrifice stability and life in exchange for power.

Attack on Gruen
Gruen

One of the most significant actions attributed to the Scions of Geth was the attack on the city-state of Gruen, an event that would later be cited as a key justification for the Great Purge.

During the attack, a group of Draol vormongers—identified as Galem, Caldrid, Ilosa, and Zialyn—utilized advanced and coordinated magic to overwhelm the city’s defenses. Their tactics included the use of portals to transport enemy forces, large-scale environmental manipulation, and the harvesting of vorsys generated from the battle itself. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

The assault resulted in widespread destruction, the collapse of Gruen’s defenses, and the eventual fall of the citadel of Eldstone.

Use of Soulpiercers
The attack on Gruen is also notable for the confirmed use of a Soulpiercer, an exceedingly rare and dangerous class of vorbright capable of exerting direct control over other spellcasters.

During the fall of Eldstone, the Eari wizard Anocast, advisor to King Ealred 4, was overtaken by such an individual—identified as Zialyn. Through this ability, Anocast was forced to act against his will, ultimately resulting in the death of the king and the collapse of organized resistance within the citadel. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

The existence of soulpiercers was considered so dangerous that all known magical schools had standing practices to eliminate individuals who exhibited such abilities. Their use by the Scions of Geth was seen as a direct violation of the most severe prohibitions of the Ygwer Code.

Role in the Great Purge
The actions of the Scions of Geth, particularly high-profile events such as the attack on Gruen, demonstrated the scale and unpredictability of unrestrained magic.

In response, the Eari successfully persuaded world leaders that the threat posed by magic was existential. Although initial efforts were directed toward eliminating the Scions, the scope of the campaign quickly expanded to include all practitioners of magic.

This culminated in the Great Purge, during which both the Draol and Eari were ultimately destroyed.

Legacy
The Scions of Geth are remembered as a turning point in the history of Galwyndor. Their actions provided the final justification for the global eradication of magic, and their methods remain the clearest example of the destructive potential of unrestrained vorsys.

1st Great War

One of the most significant actions attributed to the Scions of Geth was the attack on the city-state of Gruen, an event that would later be cited as a key justification for the Great Purge.

During the attack, a group of Draol vormongers—identified as Galem, Caldrid, Ilosa, and Zialyn—utilized advanced and coordinated magic to overwhelm the city’s defenses. Their tactics included the use of portals to transport enemy forces, large-scale environmental manipulation, and the harvesting of vorsys generated from the battle itself. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

During the fall of Eldstone, the Eari wizard Anocast, advisor to King Ealred 4, was overtaken by such an individual—identified as Zialyn. Through this ability, Anocast was forced to act against his will, ultimately resulting in the death of the king and the collapse of organized resistance within the citadel. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

The Scions of Geth were a clandestine sect of the Draol order that emerged in the later periods of the Age of Emperors and into the Age of Temperance. They rejected not only the structured doctrines of the Eari, but also the increasingly institutional nature of the Draol themselves.

The Scions of Geth believed that all formalized magical systems—particularly those governed by ethical frameworks such as the Ygwer Code—were artificial constraints that weakened practitioners and obscured the true nature of Vorsys. Drawing inspiration from the ancient sorcerers of the pre-war era, they sought a return to unrestricted use of magic, free from doctrine, limitation, or oversight.

Philosophical Position
The Scions of Geth held that magic was a birthright of the capable, and that any attempt to regulate or moralize its use was a form of control imposed by the weak upon the strong. They viewed both the Eari and the Draol as compromised institutions—one shackled by rules, the other diluted by structure.

Central to their belief was the rejection of the Ygwer Code, which they saw as a tool of suppression. Where the Eari emphasized discipline and the Draol emphasized mastery, the Scions emphasized absolute freedom and dominance.

They believed that the ancient sorcerers, who ruled prior to the 1st Great War, represented the truest expression of magical potential, unburdened by the constraints of later ages.

Practices
The Scions of Geth were known for extreme and often forbidden applications of magic. Unlike other orders, they did not differentiate between acceptable and illicit use, and were widely believed to engage in practices that had long been abandoned by both the Eari and Draol.

Among these were:

* The harvesting of large quantities of vorsys from violent conflict and mass death
* The use of portals and spatial manipulation to traverse great distances
* The manipulation or destruction of living beings to amplify magical output
* The disregard for stability, often resulting in unpredictable or catastrophic outcomes

These practices were considered violations of multiple Illitions under the Ygwer Code, further solidifying their reputation as dangerous extremists.

History
The Scions of Geth are believed to have originated as a dissident faction within the Draol order, though the exact date of their formation is unknown. Their rise coincided with increasing tensions between magical institutions and the growing influence of ethical regulation.

As both the Eari and Draol became more structured and politically entangled, certain practitioners grew disillusioned with what they perceived as limitations placed upon their potential. These individuals began to operate outside of established systems, forming loose networks that would eventually become the Scions of Geth.

By the time of the 4th Great War, the Scions had grown into a significant and destabilizing force. Their actions, particularly high-profile attacks utilizing large-scale destructive magic, played a central role in shifting public and political opinion against all magic users.

One such event, widely regarded as a turning point, involved the use of coordinated Draol magic to devastate entire regions, demonstrating a level of power and disregard that could not be ignored.

Notable Actions
The Scions of Geth were responsible for numerous acts of large-scale destruction during the late Age of Emperors and the onset of the Age of Temperance. Their methods often involved the deliberate escalation of violence in order to harvest and wield greater quantities of vorsys.

Accounts from the period describe the use of portals to deploy forces in unexpected locations, the amplification of environmental forces such as storms and frost, and the systematic harvesting of energy from battlefields. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

These actions frequently resulted in widespread devastation, including the destruction of cities, mass casualties, and the collapse of regional defenses.

Role in the Great Purge
The rise of the Scions of Geth was a primary catalyst for the Great Purge. Their increasingly aggressive and unrestrained use of magic convinced both the Eari and the ruling powers of Galwyndor that magic itself posed an existential threat to the world.

Although the initial objective of the Purge was to eliminate the Scions, the scope quickly expanded to include all magic users, including the Draol and ultimately the Eari themselves.

Legacy
In the aftermath of the Great Purge, the Scions of Geth were effectively eradicated, along with most practitioners of magic. However, their actions had already reshaped the course of history, serving as the final justification for the global elimination of magic.

They are remembered as both a warning and a symbol: a demonstration of the destructive potential of unrestrained power, and of the consequences of a world that failed to reconcile its relationship with magic.

The Draol were one of the two primary generalist orders of magic users prior to the Great Purge, alongside the Eari. At the outset of the Second Age, they vastly outnumbered their counterparts and were widely regarded as the dominant arcane tradition of their time. The Draol studied their arts from a campus called The Tamaligus, which was originally located in Greater Galwyndor before being relocated to a secluded region in northeast Letania (now Scurn) during the later years of their existence.

The Draol were predominantly a human order, though individuals of other races were known to join their ranks. Unlike the Eari, whose rise was closely tied to the aftermath of the 1st Great War, the Draol emerged during the same period but followed a markedly different philosophical trajectory. Where many sought to regulate and restrain magic following the war, the Draol embraced it as a natural and fundamental force, to be explored and mastered rather than restricted.

Trademark Style
The Draol school of magic preferred to hoard magical energy and release it in large, concentrated bursts. This approach often produced devastating effects, and as a result the Draol became associated with destructive applications of magic, particularly in times of war. They were frequently employed as warwhores, leveraging large-scale conflict to harness and manipulate the ambient energies generated by violence and upheaval.

The Draol were also widely believed to practice the illicit arts, which were explicitly forbidden at the Earian Institute of the Arcane. Whether this reputation was entirely deserved or partially the result of political and philosophical opposition remains a matter of debate.

Levels of Mastery
There were several levels of mastery among the Draol, though fewer than those recognized by the Eari. One began their studies at the Tamaligus as a Draol Apprentice. After completing several years of rigorous study, they would graduate to Draol Mage, at which point they were free to pursue independent study or apply their abilities in service to others.

Those who demonstrated exceptional skill might be invited to teach, achieving the rank of Draol Adept. The highest rank was that of Draol Grandmage, who served as head of the order and oversaw the academy. Unlike the Eari Archmaster, this title was often retained even after stepping down from active leadership.

History
The Draol order was founded by Jylath of Milgrund in EE 1245, in the years immediately following the 1st Great War. In contrast to later structured institutions such as the Eari, the Draol arose during a period of instability, when knowledge of magic was fragmented and poorly understood.

In the centuries following the war, numerous informal magical circles and proto-orders emerged as individuals sought to study and reclaim arcane knowledge left behind by the departing sorcerers. While many of these groups failed due to lack of structure or internal conflict, others coalesced around shared philosophies.

The Draol represented one such philosophy: that magic, or Vorsys, was a natural force that permeated all things and could be accumulated, shaped, and wielded by those capable of doing so. Rather than imposing strict limitations, the Draol encouraged exploration, adaptation, and the pursuit of power through understanding.

As the order grew, it attracted those who rejected rigid systems of control in favor of a more flexible and individualistic approach to magic. This brought them into increasing ideological conflict with emerging institutions such as the Eari, who viewed such practices as dangerous and irresponsible.

Philosophical Position
The Draol believed that magical energy, known as Vorsys, was a singular, universal force that permeated all existence. Unlike other schools, which categorized magic into distinct types or essences, the Draol viewed such distinctions as artificial constructs imposed by limited understanding.

They held that vorsys could be drawn from any source and adapted to any purpose, provided the wielder possessed sufficient mastery. This belief stood in direct opposition to the doctrines of the Eari and other traditions, which maintained that specific sources of magic were inherently tied to particular applications.

To the Draol, magic represented freedom—freedom from constraint, from dogma, and from imposed limitations. This emphasis on autonomy and power made the order both influential and controversial, and contributed to their reputation as unpredictable and, at times, dangerous.

Vorsys Mythos
The Draol taught that vorsys originated from a cosmic battle between two vordragons, whose conflict gave rise to the fundamental energies of the world. In this view, magic was not divided into discrete categories, but was instead a unified force shaped by the characteristics of its source.

Where other traditions believed that magical sources were imbued with inherent essences, the Draol argued that it was the source itself that imparted its qualities onto the vorsys drawn from it. This distinction allowed them to apply magic more flexibly, often using whatever sources were available rather than adhering to strict conventions.

Because of this approach, the Draol were capable of adapting their magic to a wide range of situations, though critics argued that this came at the cost of precision and safety.

The Great Purge
Great Purge

At the time of the Great Purge, the Draol were one of the last remaining orders of magic, alongside the Eari. As the conflict escalated, factions within the Draol—most notably the Scions of Geth—were accused of increasingly destructive and destabilizing acts.

The Eari, perceiving these developments as an existential threat, successfully persuaded world leaders to sanction the elimination of magic. In the ensuing purge, the Draol were systematically hunted and destroyed.

At this time, the most powerful Draol was Orilac, who served as head of the order. The last known Draol was Atury, known as the Glyphmaster, who vanished during the final stages of the conflict.

Notes
*Because the Draol emphasized accumulation of magical energy, a mage's power was determined primarily by how much vorsys they could absorb, and secondarily by how effectively they could wield it.

The Eari were one of the few remaining orders of magic users prior to the Great Purge. At the outset of the Second Age, they were only one of two generalist magic orders, being vastly outnumbered by the Draol order. Prevailing sentiments at the time were that the Eari were widely regarded as the "good" school of magic, as they often mixed their brand of magic with the divine. They also forbid teaching of the illicit arts in their institute, and garnered a reputation for being extremely responsible with their power. This reputation was mostly due to their strict adherence to the Ygwer Code, an ethical standard that they did not create but ultimately came to identify with. Their motto was Trulina ei Sforita, which means "Wisdom and Temperance" in High Vinthish. They were headquartered from their primary school at the Earian Institute of the Arcane in the kingdom of Meralia. The last Eari Archmaster was Cecian the Calm, who was at the time considered the greatest wizard of their time. Their emblem was a white interlocking seven-pointed star over a field of blue.

The Eari were predominantly a human order, though individuals of other races were known to study within their ranks. Their rise was closely tied to the aftermath of the 1st Great War, during which human populations of Lesser Galwyndor experienced prolonged subjugation under foreign sorcerers. In response, the Eari emerged as part of a broader effort to systematize and regulate the use of magic, with the goal of preventing its use as a tool of oppression.

Trademark Style
The Eari school of magic preferred to use magic in smaller bursts, which forced them to use magic in wiser, more economical ways than their Draol counterparts. They most often used it for things like healing, protection, and enchanting things.

Levels of Mastery
There were several levels of mastery among the Eari, more than the other schools. One began their studies at the Institute as an Eari Pupil. Only after completing several years of rigorous study in a variety of disciplines would one then graduate to Eari Mage, which mirrors the progression of the Draol. At that point they were free to go off on their own to continue their own studies, or make a living however they saw fit using their skills. If one was skilled enough, they might be asked to then teach; in this case they would achieve the rank of Eari Sage. This rank also applied to those who wanted to study and advance the breadth of knowledge. Sage was basically a scholarly role. Those who wished to pursue advisory roles within courts were required to attain the rank of Eari Master, which was the highest level of mastery. The highest ranking, however, was that of Eari Archmaster, who essentially served as head of the order and oversaw the academy. This was a positional title only, though it was possible for the Archmaster to be of a higher proficiency than other Eari; such was the case with Cecian the Calm.

History
The order was founded by Boloro of Avendel in EE 1470 in response to the growing number of incompetent magic disciplines and unstructured magical practices emerging in the centuries following the 1st Great War. The only established traditions of note, according to Boloro, were the specialty schools such as the Runesworn, under whom he had previously trained as a Runemaker. Drawing from these influences, he sought to develop a more generalized and structured curriculum for the study of magic.

The most significant factor in the creation of the Eari order was the aftermath of the 1st Great War. For centuries prior, Lesser Galwyndor had been ruled by powerful sorcerers who used magic to subjugate entire populations. Although these spellcasters were ultimately driven from the continent, the war left a lasting impression: that magic, if left unchecked, could be used to dominate entire civilizations.

In the centuries following the war, numerous informal magical circles and proto-orders arose in an attempt to study and replicate arcane practices. These early efforts were often disorganized and inconsistent, lacking both standardized methodology and ethical oversight. Many collapsed due to misuse, internal conflict, or failure to gain public trust, further reinforcing the perception that magic was inherently dangerous when left unregulated.

Boloro of Avendel founded the Eari in direct response to this instability. His aim was not to abolish magic, but to impose structure, discipline, and ethical boundaries upon it. Where earlier magical traditions had been decentralized and inconsistent, the Eari sought to create a standardized system of study and conduct that could be trusted by the wider world.

Philosophical Position
The Eari believed that magic was neither inherently good nor evil, but that its consequences were determined by the discipline of its wielder. Central to their philosophy was the idea that restraint and structure were necessary to prevent catastrophe.

This placed them in direct ideological opposition to the Draol order, who viewed magic as a singular force to be accumulated and wielded freely. While the Draol emphasized power and adaptability, the Eari emphasized control, categorization, and ethical limitation.

Over time, this philosophical divide would deepen, shaping the broader discourse on magic throughout Galwyndor and contributing to the conditions that ultimately led to the Great Purge.

Founding Tenets
The order was founded on a number of key tenets, which set them up for establishing a trusted and positive reputation. These tenets were laid out in a text called the Erimidian.

*Fex should be used with restraint. Temperance prevents excess.
*Fex should be used with sound judgement. Discipline prevents recklessness.
*Fex should be used with a kind heart. Justice prevents suffering.

The core principles were still taught until the Purge, but when the Ygwer Code came into prominence, the Eari adopted it without hesitation, as it would only enhance their pursuit of excellence and goodness.

The Great Purge
It was the Eari order who first saw the existential threat of the rise of the Scions of Geth, a rebel faction of the Draol. Upon realizing the size of the threat, the Eari convinced King Helden 3 of Iselmor to call a Meeting of Lords, where they were able to convince the world leaders to eliminate the Scions.

Official Narrative
During the Great Purge, the Eari order self-eliminated in order to prevent the world from being obliterated through irresponsible use of magic. The final seventeen Eari destroyed themselves to make the Eari Stones, which would catch and trap magic so that it could never again be used. They left behind a set of instructions for how to safely use the stones, which was called the Codex Antifexa. This would all be explained by Cecian (who was then the last remaining Eari alive) during a Meeting of Lords that led to the Meralian Accord. Cecian gave an impassioned speech on the clear and present danger of magic, and convinced enough of the present attendees that total elimination of magic was necessary for the survival of the world. Thereafter, he explained the Codex, and how they would utilize the relics provided by the Eari to perform their noble task. His last act was to demonstrate the power of the Eari Stones by having one brought into the chamber, where he martyred himself to the Tal Calar who wielded the Inar-Stone. Because he was considered the most powerful wizard of the age, the effectiveness of the relics would not be called into question.

Key Texts
*The Erimidian - founding doctrine and key tenets, written by the founder.
*Codex Antifexa - textbook specifically written for the Tal Calar.

Trivia
*An Eari healer named Pertus once took some interest in a young boy from Terga, but he declined an invitation when he discovered the boy was deaf. That boy turned out to be Atury.

The 1st Great War took place from EE 1,220 and lasted 22 years and marked the end of the Age of Uprising. For a few hundred years prior to this, the continent of Lesser Galwyndor had been under the control of powerful sorcerers, all of which had sailed west from the distant lands across the Turryphian Ocean beginning in the year EE 860. These sorcerers frequently fought one another for control over lands and resources, using the commoners as resources themselves.

For three hundred and sixty years they ruled without issue; the commonfolk were no match for them and their powerful magic from across the sea, despite having battle experience from warring with ogres, goblins, and trolls. Many spellcasters leveraged the animosity and allied themselves with these other races to aid in their subjugation of humans, though many of the other races were also victims.

Inciting Incident
Then, in what is now known as Gruenormark, a mason named Blanor the Burl became incensed at their oppressors, and orchestrated a party that successfully sabotaged a tower rookery in which the mage Saretis kept the white crows he used for casting spells and making tinctures.

Word quickly spread of the Burl's victory, which inspired many to attempt similar things, most of all being attracting the attention of competing spellcasters; Blanor the Burl soon found himself with powerful allies. These spellcasters took advantage of the Burl's infamy, and manipulated many of the populace with guile to strike up a revolution against rival spellcasters. Before long, the entire continent was at war with one another, until the citizens realized they were fighting the wrong battles, and eventually united against their common enemy, the oppressors.

Most of rest of the Great War was spent engaging in sabotage and subterfuge rather than outright battle, since the mages were too powerful to meet in open combat. Ultimately, one man, Thorfast the Younger, managed to amass a large army and led them into battle on the Fields of Juralane, which is in what is now Lothlan. Others banded along with him and his men as they fought against spellcasters that could not be beaten. By now the spellcasters took a similar approach and bandied together to quash the rebellion, amassing an army of their own comprised of humans who were still loyal to them, along with other races.

The final battle lasted three days and thousands lost their lives. Not one spellcaster was killed. It was said that no blade, neither friend nor foe, could slay a spellcaster. This adage rang true, at least until Aery 2 slew the spellcaster Gethalyn.

: "Not one among the legions there that night will fail to recount what happened next, for the melee was bestilled as no act of gods could rival. A single stroke by the young Aery 2 did fell the mighty spellmaster Gethalyn - by his own sword no less, and no sooner did this swift slayer stake Gethalyn through the heart into the earth where came forth a might etherwood tree which swallowed both Gethalyn and his sword alike. The impartial eye of the Backwards Moon did also bear witness to this spectacle, which silenced the legions, brought forth the end to a Great War and the beginning of a mighty empire." -- New History of Aeryloth (which is by now ancient)

Aery 2 was able to kill the spellcaster by using the spellcaster's own sword; because "no blade, neither friend nor foe" was the enchantment, Aery 2 figured out that the spellcaster's own blade did not fit the description. A single stroke ended the First Great War; the spellcasters, afraid, fled back across the sea now that they couldn't guarantee that their power was sufficient. Aery 2 became the first king of Aeryloth and thus began the Age of Alliance.

Aftermath
The conclusion of the 1st Great War marked the end of sorcerer dominion over Lesser Galwyndor and the beginning of a new political and philosophical era. With the death of the warlock Gethalyn and the breaking of the long-held belief that spellcasters could not be slain, the remaining sorcerers abandoned the continent, retreating eastward across the Turryphian Ocean to Greater Galwyndor.

In the immediate aftermath, human populations—having endured centuries of subjugation—began consolidating power and establishing independent governance. Chief among these developments was the founding of the kingdom of Aeryloth under Aery II, which would come to symbolize the transition from fragmented resistance to organized rule.

Despite their victory, the war left a lasting psychological impact on the populace. The realization that a relatively small number of magic users had maintained control over an entire continent for generations fostered a deep and pervasive fear of magic. This fear did not immediately result in its rejection; rather, it led to a growing belief that magic must be understood in order to be countered. Over time, this sentiment contributed to the emergence of structured approaches to magical study and discipline.

The retreat of the foreign sorcerers also created a vacuum of arcane knowledge. In the absence of centralized magical authority, disparate groups and individuals began to study and systematize magic according to their own philosophies. This period saw the early development of what would later become formal magical traditions and schools.

At the same time, increased stability in Lesser Galwyndor facilitated renewed exploration and contact with Greater Galwyndor. Seafaring peoples, particularly among the Veninar, expanded maritime routes across the Turryphian Ocean, enabling the movement of people, goods, and ideas between the two continents. These exchanges would prove instrumental in shaping the cultural and political landscape of the Age of Alliance.

Although the 1st Great War ended the immediate threat of sorcerer rule in the west, it did not resolve the broader question of magic’s place in the world. Instead, it marked the beginning of a prolonged period of ideological divergence regarding its use—divergence that would, in time, contribute to the conflicts and catastrophes of later ages.
The Verges is a large, barren region just north of the Atlicas, where most of the Everwind books take place. It is sparsely populated and desolate, making it a haven for criminal activity. In addition to the unfavorable conditions of the landscape itself, a perpetual wind called the Everwind prevents many plants from taking root, as the top soil is regularly displaced. The unofficial capitol is Everwind City. The region was recently acquired by Clavermark with no resistance, as neighboring Aeryl and Gruenormark, who both owned portions of it previously, did not want to fight for it. The region holds no distinct advantage and produces no key resources except for limited salt and in some places, byrridium.
Wellen 15 of House Brant is the King of Aeryl. He is the only surviving member of his immediate household. He is to be succeeded by his nephew, Crownprince Falder of Brant, son of his brother, Waldor of Brant.

He is mentioned in Outrider by the rolg player, Lugo Finth.

Appearance
Wellen's most noticeable feature is his size. He is nearly 400 pounds, and the largest royal in all the houses. In addition to this, he is reputed to have a retinue of servants who carry him ten at a time on a litter, as he has difficulty walking. This is mostly rumor; as he has a mechanical chair that can change position between sitting and standing. This has earned him the secret nickname of King King, as he has the size of two people.
}}
Vralius of House Claverian is the self-proclaimed High Emperor of the Clavic Empire, otherwise known as Clavermark. He was a general prior to the Black Sam epidemic; he came to power during the chaos of the epidemic by assassinating the royal house of Glengard (which he served at the time); this was then blamed on House Reddick. This launched his empirical campaign as he set out to "avenge" the deaths of the royal family. Some suspect his involvement, though it has never been proven. He is known to be calculating and cruel.

Vralius resides in the Imperial Tower at Victurus Palace, right on the shores of Lak Burntide. He employs the counsel of three Arkaeni, who, when combined with the formidable intelligence and ingenuity of daector Talmage, manage to infuse magic with science. He also has a Vurg advisor, Sleika, who arrived as an ambassador right around the time of Clavermark's halted expansion campaign.

His face is seen on the Clavic Gildan, the official currency of Clavermark.

He has an only daughter, the illegitimate Lariana Claverian by a whore named Nori Blount.

Origins
Vralius was born in 1279 in Derth as an only child to wealthy aristocratic parents. His father, Olred Claverian, was a prominent businessman who inherited a large fortune from silk and pell wool, which he used to expand his empire into other ventures, such as pharmaceuticals and technology.

Vral's parents, Olred and Korina, were killed in a storm while sailing to Vornwall when he was a boy of nine. He was then raised by his father's brother Hindis Claverian and his family at their estate in Falingrad. His uncle, through subterfuge, managed to persuade him to relinquish rights to his inheritance under what was supposed to be a temporary contract, which turned out to be false.

Military Service
After his uncle's treachery, Vralius religiously saved every penny he could until he was of the age to enter into military service in order to get away from his uncle.

Determined to forge his own destiny and build his own fortune, he joined the army of Faramark at age 17, which was the youngest age allowed at the time. After initial training he was assigned to the 44th Infantry Brigade in Derth.

After a few years, he earned his commission by paying his own way into and attending the Faramian War College, a prominent military academy in Derth, which has since been replaced by the Clavic Officer Candidacy Academy. While at the college, he excelled in wartime strategy, politics, and economics. He rose through the officer ranks and eventually became a general at age 44.

Oracle
Rise to Power
Given that he was a master of war strategy and politics, Vralius spent his entire military career hoping for a chance to put his extensive knowledge into use, but King Fandis of Glengard, a pacifist, would never sanction anything that leveraged Vral's skills. Vralius tried convincing him with the promise of expansion, but Fandis was on good terms with all the neighboring states. Vralius grew increasingly frustrated with having his ambitions crushed by the king. When the Curella virus hit, Vralius saw an opportunity to gain power and to utilize his knowledge. He fabricated a false flag by assassinating the House Glengard, then framed the country of Wuerlan for using the plague as a means to gain power. Since Vralius was a beloved figure in Faramark, he was easily able to incite the populace to follow him into war with Wuerlan so he could avenge the royal family.

The invasion of Wuerlan happened swiftly, as no one had seen it coming and there was no time to present any evidence of their innocence. The epidemic plunged everything into chaos, giving Vralius the opportunity he had been waiting for. Following Wuerlan, he then invaded Phoros and then took over parts of Praul. He was eventually given the entirely of the Verges without a fight.

Halted Expansion
After the acquisition of the Verges in 1333, Vralius halted his bloody expansion campaign for no discernible reason. It was right around this time when the Vurg sent their ambassador. Vralius moved out of Whispering Towers into the newly constructed Victurus Palace and began working on several secret projects full-time, most notably the ones he was involved in with Talmage and the Arkaeni.

Castus:

Overball is a field sport, with elements of earthly soccer, rugby, and volleyball. The game is named so because the ball, called the overball, remains in play only while it is in the air. Movement stops when the ball touches the ground. Overball is the favorite pastime of common citizens and nobility alike.

It is thought by some conspiracy theorists that overball was invented by the ruling elite to distract citizens from corruption and tyranny.

See Overball Rules for the full set of rules.

Winning Conditions
The team with the most points after 90 minutes or whichever reaches 9 points is the winner. There is no overtime. If teams are tied, the game results in a draw.

Time
A game is set for 90 minutes total, broken up into three tries. 1st and 3rd tries begin with a kickoff, determined by coin toss (winner of the toss picks which try they kick and receive). 2nd try begins with a pip-off from center pip.

The clock does not stop during gameplay except during penalties and injuries. Teams are allowed 45 seconds during transitional moments to get set (ball changes hands, out of bounds, backstop).

Field and Equipment
The overball field is (approximately) 100 meters long by 40 meters wide, with a goal area on each side that's about 10 meters deep. The goal area is called the shade. The field is divided up into ten sections, each about 10 meters thick, called spills. The center of the field, at the halfline, is the ring, and the center point on the field is called the center pip. There is also one triangle dead center in the second spill on each side, which are called the back pips. These back pips are used for penalty kicks and kickoffs. The center pip is only used at the start of the second try pip-off, where the ball is placed on the center pip.

Players
There can be no more than ten players on a side at any given time.

Backfield
*Defender
*Leftback
*Rightback

The defender and the two backs are mostly on the backfield to defend against any sudden deep penetration of their home shade.

Back and Midfield
*Roamer

The roamer floats anywhere in the back and midfield. When a roamer is in play, typically one of the forwards will be out to allow a more defense-heavy formation.

Midfield
*Center
*Left Midrider
*Right Midrider

The Center is traditionally the most versatile player on the field, as he can cover all the surrounding positions, but the other difficult positions to play are roamer and trader. The two midriders are also similarly veratile, able to play both back and front fields, though they are often large in size to enable strong hits all along the midfield.

Frontfield
*Left Forward
*Right Forward
*Left Breaker
*Right Breaker
*Frontrider

The forwards are usually the fastest and most agile players on the team, second to the backs. They are the ones most likely to score. The breakers are typically some of the largest players. Their job is to wreak havoc on the others team from the flank side. They also provide solid blocking for the forwards. The frontrider plays the entire front zone in a defense-heavy formation, which is usually used to give other frontfielders a rest.

A frontrider is usually used as an extra forward in an offense-heavy formation. Usually when a frontrider is in play, the center is out.

Other
*Trader

The trader can cover any position, and is usually used to provide active relief to the other players. The trader is typically a very skilled player, oftentimes used as a sort of ringer for when the other players are injured or tired.

The initial positioning on the field upon "pip-off" has the players from each side lined up as in the diagram. During the rest of the game, players can take whatever positioning they want, barring any limitations (dead ball buffer).

Gameplay
The premise is that the ball must be in the air in order to make forward progress for a side, whose object is to get the overball into the opposite side's shade. The ball may be thrown, popped, kicked, tossed, or bumped forwards to another player.

Players may catch the ball, but they can only run backwards or sideways with it, never forwards (players may run forward after gaining possesion of the ball as long as they stay within their spill). The other side may attempt to create a dead ball by tackling the player only during a carry. A tackle puts the ball into the other side's possession with a stop, which is when players are reset and that side starts with the ball in hand. During a stop, the other side must buffer by positioning in the adjacent spills. The side in possession can only have a maximum of three players within the spill of the overball.

If the ball hits the ground outside of a tackle, it becomes grounded and players can only kick it backwards or sideways, never forwards (the ball may only move forwards if it remains within the spill). Players can only carry it if they receive possession of the overball while it is in the air; if it is grounded outside of a tackle, another player must kick it up to another player.

Scoring happens when a side gains control of the ball within the other team's shade. They then switch sides and the defender kicks off from the back pip.

A backstop happens when a side gains control of the ball inside the driving side's defending shade. This is the only time a player can "handle" the ball while grounded. A backstop is considered a goal.

Penalties
*Intentional Grounding - If a player has control of the overball, he cannot intentionally ground the ball (so as to resume kicking it back to teammates) to avoid tackle. He can only throw or kick the ball forward to get rid of it.
*Contact Foul - A player cannot tackle, slam, kick, punch, etc. another player who does not have control of the ball except when actively trying to go to the ball. A penalty kick is awarded.
*Contact Foul (Kicking) - A player cannot contact another player with the soul of their feet except in instances where a player goes down and gets stepped on during normal gameplay. Ball moves forward one shade.
*Contact Foul (Slicing) - A play cannot use the head when making a tackle. Ball moves forward one shade.
*Contact Foul (Sweeping) - A player cannot sweep another player off their feet except when making a play to get the ball. Ball moves forward one shade.
*Holding - A player cannot grab onto another player's jersey except during a tackle attempt. Ball moves forward one shade.
*Handling - A player cannot touch a grounded ball with the hands unless another player kicks it into the air. Ball changes possession.
*Interference - A player cannot force another player out of the way to gain access to a ball in play. Ball is grounded in offensive possession at the spot of the infraction.
*Illegal Forward Motion - A player cannot kick the ball forward while it's grounded, nor can he carry it forward (except for forward movement within the spill). Infraction results in the ball moving back one spill. If the ball moves into the home spill by penalty in this manner, the other team scores a goal.
*Out of Bounds - The ball resumes play in the other side's possession from the location it was upon exiting the field (whichever team last made contact with the ball gives up possession).
*Delay - If a team takes more than 35 seconds during a transition, they incur a delay pentalty, and forfeit possession of the ball.

Penalty Notes
*A ball can move forward by penalty only until the final spill. It cannot move forward into the shade by penalty, resulting in a goal. It can, however, move backward into the shade and result in a goal (see illegal forward motion).
*Penalty Kicks - A team may be awarded a penalty kick. Besides kickoffs, this is the only time a grounded ball can be kicked forward. Penalty kicks are usually placed at the spot of the infraction, and opposing players must buffer.

Season and Playoffs
Each team plays 15 games during the regular season, with at least one bye. Playoffs consist of the top 6 teams from the standings.
Playoff Structure
*Week 1: Wild Card Round
**Game 1: Seed 3 vs Seed 6
**Game 2: Seed 4 vs Seed 5
**(Seeds 1 and 2 get a bye)
*Week 2: Semifinals
**Game 3: Seed 1 vs Lower Seed Winner from Wild Card (i.e., lowest-numbered seed that advanced)
**Game 4: Seed 2 vs Higher Seed Winner from Wild Card
*Week 3: Championship
**Game 5 (Final): Winner of Game 3 vs Winner of Game 4
}}
Averia is one of the oldest nations in Lesser Galwyndor, having existed in some form since before the time of the Great Purge, when it was known as Enildu. It is currently ruled by House Sable from the capital city of Highthrall.

People from Averia are referred to as "Averian".

History
Averia was once known as Enildu, a powerful coastal kingdom that thrived on its strong navy and trade access. After the Great Purge, the kingdom restructured into the current Averian nation, consolidating its lands under the Sable dynasty. It has maintained its influence in northern Lesser Galwyndor ever since, especially through cultural and religious ties to Lothlan.

Geography
Climate and Environment
Averia’s coastal climate is misty and damp for much of the year, with cold winds sweeping down from the northern seas. The terrain consists of grassy highlands, marshy river deltas, and ancient stone plateaus. Forests are rare and dying. Much of the native vegetation is moss, lichen, and saltgrass.

Provinces
Averia is made up of three official provinces:
* Averia Province – governed by Baerus Svan Furst
* Blaerlan – governed by Earlus Thad Caervund
* Farne – governed by Daekus Seth Mathan

Politics
Government
Averia is a feudal monarchy under House Sable, with noble families appointed as lords of each province. Power is centralized through Highthrall, though provinces maintain local courts and armies.

Law
Justice in Averia is mostly dispensed by regional tribunals overseen by appointed magistrates, though the Queen herself sometimes oversees sentencing. Crimes against the nobility or Church are punished more severely than common offenses. Public floggings and short-term indenture are common sentences.

Allies
Averia shares strong religious and cultural ties with Lothlan and opened trade relations with Scurn after Gruenormark placed an embargo on it. It is loosely allied with Terismark, which seceded from Aeryl and aligned with Averia’s Q'evrist values.

Rivals
Averia has a long-standing rivalry with Aeryl, dating back to the Aerylothian Civil War. It also maintains a cold hostility with Gruenormark over ideological and territorial tensions. The Scurnish ambassador to Terismark serves as Averia’s informal representative.

Military
*See also: Military Ranks

Economy
Agriculture
Due to the harsh coastal environment and dwindling plant life, Averia focuses on sea farming (kelp, algae), mushroom cultivation in wet stone hollows, and the harvesting of native root vegetables. Fishing remains the main food source.

Industry
Averia is known for its fine glasswork and carved stone idols, as well as its dyes and inks made from rare sea creatures. It imports metals from Andermark and exports processed goods, religious art, and manuscripts.

Demographics
Language
The official language is Canderian.

Religion
Averia is the birthplace of Q'evrism, the dominant religion in the region. The faith is practiced devoutly across the nation, with churches in every major town and the Temple of Qevreth located in Highthrall itself. When Queen Caliana was wed to Theoris 3, she had to convert to Q'evrism, as she was Tethuric, being from Lothlan. After she came into power, she allowed the Tethuric Church to come into Averia as a show of good faith, though this move incensed many of her constituents.

Culture
Averians are deeply ritualistic, viewing ceremony as central to both personal identity and civic life. Noble blood is highly revered, and ancestral purity is tied to divine favor.

Sex and Marriage
Marriage is often political, and arranged unions are common among noble houses. However, private romantic partnerships are not stigmatized unless they threaten alliances.

Death
Averians conduct funerary burnings only after a three-day ritual of purification. Ashes are stored in family crypts beneath cathedrals. Those denied rites are buried in the "Unrested Ground."

Rites of Passage
Young Averians recite their House Prayer in public at age 13. This is followed by a blessing of the tongue by a Q'evrist priest to initiate them into adulthood.

Superstition
* Never speak a name backwards—it invites spiritual reversal.
* Only drink from the right side of the cup during a funeral.
* The phrase “fire knows the liar” is commonly whispered to test someone's truthfulness.
